Etienne BuscarletHydrogeologist at French Geological Survey (BRGM)Speaker
Profile
Etienne Buscarlet is a hydrogeologist at the French Geological Survey (BRGM) with 20 years of experience, mostly as a technical expert in groundwater resources. Etienne has carried out scientific and engineering projects in France and in different countries worldwide to support the management of groundwater systems at regional and local scales, for various stakeholders (industrials, regulators, government agencies, public communities), including field investigations, resource assessment, monitoring, and modelling.
After an academic background in Hydraulics and Fluid mechanics, Earth sciences and environment, Etienne started his professional career in a water and environment consultancy. As a consultant, he participated in groundwater assessment and modelling projects. From 2008 to 2011, he joined the Water division in BRGM and participated in in-depth groundwater modelling projects, aiming at supporting the management of groundwater resources. From 2012 to 2018 Etienne then joined a geothermal power company in New Zealand. His role aimed at assessing the impacts of geothermal generation on overlying aquifers, as well as supporting the management of the geothermal reservoirs for power generation. Since 2018 to date, Etienne is now a senior hydrogeologist at the Water department in BRGM and conduct various projects in groundwater resources assessment and management.
During 2023-2026, he supervised an AFD-funded project, in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Water Authority of Jordan, on the groundwater resource assessment of the Disi aquifer in Jordan with a focus on the natural radium contamination in the aquifer. The project aimed at evaluating the radium distribution and behavior in the aquifer, map and predict its occurrence and provide support for the management of this critical water source in Jordan.
