Greenbuild's sustainability goals
The Greenbuild International Conference + Expo has established seven long-term goals for improving the sustainability performance of the show.
We believe these goals address the most relevant event impacts of both Greenbuild and the meetings and events industry. Greenbuild is more committed than ever to producing a sustainable event that positively impacts our industry.
Greenbuild & the SDGs
Since 2021 Greenbuild has been tracking our actions against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as Global Goals. These are a set of 17 integrated and interrelated goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that humanity enjoys peace and prosperity by 2030.
Reporting on the SDGs is an important step for trade shows and events to communicate their commitment to the achievement of these Global Goals; claiming accountability and responsibility to take the necessary actions; and measuring progress over time. We are proud that Greenbuild can support almost all the Sustainable Development Goals.
Equity, inclusion & wellbeing
To remain relevant for the next generation of leaders, Greenbuild must prioritize diversity at every turn, challenging established thinking and providing opportunities to learn more about topics that drive change. Everything we do contributes to creating the ultimate experience: a safe and inclusive space where people can gather and celebrate together.
Participate in Greenbuild's wellness activities, including morning yoga, a run/walk club, and various quiet workspaces. Greenbuild's JEDI principles include the renowned Women in Green luncheon, which unites hundreds of sustainability professionals from around the world.

Reduce emissions
Take Public Transit: we encouraged attendees to use the MTA website to help find the best route to Greenbuild. Public transportation is key for us to reduce emissions and stress from the city's traffic.
Reduce waste
We produce a zero-waste event by prioritizing re-useable, recyclable and compostable material and packaging. BOYB: Bring Your Own Bottle. Attendees brought refillable water bottles and reusable coffee cups to reduce waste.

Showing up for the local community!
The Sustainability Hub in the Greenbuild Expo Hall gets attendees involved in helping the local community.
2026 Legacy Project
Every year, Greenbuild leaves a lasting, positive footprint on its host city through the Greenbuild Legacy Project. This annual initiative champions a local project that embodies the transformative power of sustainability—advancing community health, equity and climate resilience—and is selected by the Greenbuild Host Committee.
The Billion Oyster Project has been officially named the 2026 Greenbuild Legacy Project. The New York City–based nonprofit is on a mission to restore oyster reefs to New York Harbor by fostering hands-on restoration and public education. Through the Billion Oyster Project's innovative Shell Recycling Program, oyster shells that would otherwise head to landfills are collected from restaurants, cured on Governors Island, cleaned by volunteers and returned to the harbor as the literal bedrock for new, living oyster reefs.
Exhibitor sustainability
Greenbuild's Mandatory Green Exhibitor Guidelines (GMEGG) is a required sustainability initiative to be completed before arriving on-site at Greenbuild. We consider everything from lighting, collateral materials in a booth, and transportation for booth staff on-site. Our goal is to help ascertain small changes to reduce overall environmental impact.
Exhibitors impact the success of our sustainability efforts on-site, and exhibitors who meet all GMEGG requirements are considered for the Greenbuild Green Exhibitor Awards - an excellent way to gain visibility into your organization's sustainable practices and drive traffic to your booth. With each exhibiting company committing to sustainable exhibiting practices and making minor changes to their booth, it has a massive impact (see the results in our previous year's Sustainability Reports).
